Muzicians

Do you expect too much from worship services? What are you putting into it?

Sunday after Sunday as I play in church, I notice the somber faces and quiet presence of those in the audience while the musicians are playing, the choir is singing, and the preaching is preaching with all of his might. As I often look over the audience to gauge their ‘temperature’, I realize that we have so many who come out with what appears to be a need for being entertained rather than worshipping. I see more observation than participation which can leave many leaving as empty as they came. I often wonder if they even know why they’re coming to church. Is it due to routine? Obligation? I mean, what is your motivation for coming Sunday after Sunday if you can’t move, clap, smile, or say “Amen” every now and then.

As I have matured in age and wisdom, I realize that many songs ‘hit’ me differently than they may have years or even months ago. The reason why is because of looking back over things I’ve gone through or may be going through at the moment. The lyrics to the songs are so powerful similar to the scriptures covered by the preacher. I’ve come to have a greater appreciation for so music the older I get. I remember my mom humming various gospel hymns which did not appeal to me in my young age because I hadn’t gone through enough in life to appreciate the lyrics and their meaning.

I encourage those who attend at any time to exam what they’re expecting when going to church. What role are you playing? Are you fan who has simply come to a church with expectation of a concert experience? That’s not worship. It’s a participatory act.
